I’d recommend it to those who believe they might enjoy it, or are thinking about taking a chance on it! Recommend?: This book wasn’t overly deep or complex, but I really did enjoy it. I’m fond of America and Maxon, and not completely sure about Aspen in this book, but I look forward to getting to know each of them in the next book. Overall Review: After everything that happened in this book, I really look forward to learning more about the world these characters inhabit, and to see how things turn out in the next book, The Elite. If you’re going to have someone on the inside tell you when a girl has done something wrong and you don’t believe her when she tells you something, then what was the whole point? He’s supposed to trust her and while I can get why he doesn’t fully (they haven’t even known her all that long) I do think he should listen to her since he agreed to have her be his inner “spy”. What I didn’t like: Maxon had America as basically a spy for the girl, but when she was trying to tell him about the things that one of the girls did that went against the rules, he didn’t believe her. I also liked how even with everything that was going on with the Selection process, you got glimpses of things that were going on outside the palace. It especially came through in Aspen and Celeste, two characters from the opposite ends of the caste. You could see how it affects how the girls act, even if you don’t follow them specifically. The caste system, while really simple and seemingly based off of the caste system of Medieval times in a way, wasn’t overly complex which was good, and I actually liked seeing how it affected the different characters. The Selection, a program for young, unwed women who can be chosen to be the future queen of the kingdom they have lived in all their lives, Illéa. What I liked: I found the concept of this book to be not only intriguing, but well thought out and a nice, fun read. Gradually, she starts to question all the plans she’s made for herself–and realizes that the life she’s always dreamed of may not compare to a future she never imagined. Living in a palace that is constantly threatened by violent rebel attacks. Leaving her home to enter a fierce competition for a crown she doesn’t want. It means turning her back on her secret love with Aspen, who is a caste below her. But for America Singer, being Selected is a nightmare. To live in a palace and compete for the heart of gorgeous Prince Maxon. To be swept up in a world of glittering gowns and priceless jewels. The opportunity to escape the life laid out for them since birth. For thirty-five girls, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime.
